Pain for Pride

The video fades in, following Madison and Chloe Reigner through the Motor Speedway as they locate their seats. Because they didn’t take advantage of Noah’s family ticket perk (that they weren’t aware of), they found themselves sitting in the higher seats of the bowl. Not the best seats, by far, but not too terrible either. Everything was still in plain sight. Madison settled into her seat first, not bothering to pay attention to any of the surrounding fans. Chloe sat down after, handing her mother’s beverage to her.

MADISON REIGNER “This is insane, Chloe.”

She said, absolutely dumbfounded by everything.

MADISON REIGNER “It’s insane that this many people are into professional wrestling, and it’s insane that our Noah is going to be competing in front of all of these people.”

CHLOE REIGNER “The events are completely sold out, too. Four days of wrestling plus concerts and all kinds of things. I’m sure there are meet and greets, and signings and such too.”

Madison didn’t respond, she just continued to look all around the Speedway that has been redesigned for the elaborate set up for Pain for Pride. She didn’t notice Chloe shuffling in the seat next to her. It wasn’t until Chloe spoke up again that Madison’s attention was grabbed.

CHLOE REIGNER “Oh, I got you this.”

Madison turned back to Chloe to see her daughter holding up Noah’s “Assault Rifle” t-shirt. Madison smiled, taking it from Chloe.

MADISON REIGNER “The Assault Rifle? I’m not sure I like that…”

Chloe giggled.

CHLOE REIGNER “It’s a nickname he got that references his tag team, the Firing Squad.”

MADISON REIGNER “What shirt did you get?”

CHLOE REIGNER “The new Jaded Hearts one.”

She said with a giant smile.

PRE-TAPED VIDEO PACKAGE

“You can say, I took the first step up that ladder at Culture Crisis.”

A highlight film started just after Noah’s voice. The first footage seen was of Culture Crisis. The film had two filters over it, the first being a black and white filter and the next being one to add grainy texture.

CULTURE CRISIS
HE GRABS HIM AND ATTEMPTS THE HARD GOODBYE! SHACKLEFORD FENDS HIM OFF WITH SEVERAL KNEES TO THE MIDSECTION! He now knocks him down with a shoulder block! Shackleford climbs to the top rope!

Stew: Shackleford is preparing to leap! THE LEAP OF FAITH! A DIVING ELBOW DROP! IT’S NOT GOOD! NOAH ROLLS OUT OF THE WAY! Shackleford crashes into the mat and grabs his elbow in pain! Now out here at ringside in front of us stands Lucas Johnson! He is back on his feet and is grabbing a ladder! He picks it up and holds it horizontally. Noah Reiner sees this! He goes to the ropes… SPRING BOARD CROSSBODY! NOAH CRASHES INTO LUCAS JOHNSON AND THE LADDER HE WAS HOLDING!

“I was told that I would fail. I was told that I was out of my league against someone like Lucas Johnson. A former champion and a name with a massive following and reputation here in the EAW. I was told that it was his match from the get-go and that once more he will ascend to the top of the company to regain some of his credibility back after falling on hard times. Everyone doubted me, everyone saw me as just a flash in the pan. A new comer who quietly put together a few wins and then would fade into mediocrity just as quickly. No one imagined that I would do the ‘unthinkable’ and actually win the match. Especially Lucas Johnson, who threw everything he had at me.”

CULTURE CRISIS
What the hell is Lucas Johnson doing?! He has Noah here on our table with a ladder on top of him and Shackleford onto of that ladder! Lucas now grabs a nearby ladder and drags it in front of our table! WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING! LUCAS JOHNSON NOW CLIMBS THE LADDER! HE GETS TO THE TOP OF IT AND LOOKS DOWN AT NOAH AND SHACKLEFORD WITH THAT LADDER INBETWEEN THEM AS THEY LAY ON TOP OF OUR ANNOUNCER TABLE! LUCAS DOES IT! HE LEAPS! MY GOD! A DIVING MOONSAULT OFF THE TOP OF THAT LADDER! HE CRASHES DOWN ON TOP OF SHACKLEFORD, NOAH, AND THAT LADDER AS THE TABLE BREAKS BENEATH THEM!

“But what Lucas and what Shackleford failed to take into consideration was my heart and my passion. I said from the very beginning I wanted to be considered as one of the best to ever step foot in the EAW, and I meant it. Lucas Johnson threw everything he could at me, even nearly killing myself and himself in the process - but at the end of the night, I was his kyrptonite. I was his downfall, even after all of the shit that he talked. Even after all of the threats and all of the empty-promises he made, I made the biggest move I’ve made thus far in my career and I pulled down that contract. But not before introducing those two to a special ‘friend’ of mine.”

You could hear the arrogance in his tone.

CULTURE CRISIS
LOOK ON THE APRON! IT’S NOAH REIGNER! HE HAS A STEEL CHAIR IN HAND AS HE STRUGGLES TO HIS FEET! MEANWHILE JOHNSON STRONGLY TRIES TO JERK THE CONTRACT FROM THE GRASP OF SHACKLEFORD BUT HE PULLS TOO! THE THING MAY BREAK AT THIS RATE! WAIT?! WHAT’S HE DOING! NOAH REIGNER IS UP AND GRABS THE RING ROPES WHILE HOLDING ON TO THAT STEEL CHAIR! HE SPRING BOARDS… AND LANDS ON THE LADDER AND CLIMBS THE RUNGS UP! HE DID THAT TO GET THERE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE AS JOHNSON AND SHACKLEFORD FIGHT OVER THE CONTRACT!

Stew: THEY REALIZE THAT NOAH JUST LANDED ON THE LADDER! THEY’RE TIED UP BY HOLDING ONTO THAT CONTRACT AND ARE DEFENSELESS! NOAH STILL HAS THAT CHAIR IN HAND AS HE LANDED ON THE LADDER WITH IT! HE GRABS IT AND CONNECTS TO THE HEAD OF SHACKLEFORD! HE FALLS! NOAH SWINGS AGAIN RIGHT INTO THE HEAD OF LUCAS JOHNSON! LUCAS LOSES HIS HOLD ON THE CONTRACT AND FALLS TO THE RING BELOW! NOAH DROPS THE CHAIR AND GRABS THE CONTRACT! HE HAS IT! HE UNHOOKS IT!

“And then? Then I went on to defeat a current reigning champion in the company. Another match that people said I wasn’t ready for. That I was underdeveloped as an athlete and not experienced enough to defeat someone like Cody Marshall, and what happened?”

DYNASTY
Noah Reigner is back to his feet in the corner… AND HERE COMES CODY MARSHALL!!… BUT NOAH REIGNER… REIGNER SIDESTEPS THE ATTACK, HE STICKS HIS FOOT OUT TRIPPING CODY MARSHALL UP!!… CODY GOES FACE FIRST INTO THE TURNBUCKLE, AND NOW NOAH REIGNER FROM BEHIND WITH THE ROLL UP!!

ONEEE!!… TWOOO!!… THREEEE!!
“I OUTSMARTED the champion and pinned him with a simple roll up. Make all of the insults you want, but trying to discredit me for being in this match is a foolish move. A current champion, a former champion and a man assumed to be one of the faces of the future had fallen victim to thinking that. But that wouldn’t be all.”

SHOWDOWN
Dubian begins pounding his fist into the canvas! He’s setting up for the Bleeding Edge and he’s fully intent on it! He’s awaiting, Noah stirs holding at his lower back! DUBIAN SPINS HIM AROUND! BLEEDING EDGE!! NOAH PUSHES DUBIAN OFF!!! THE KILL SHOT!!!! RUNNING BICYCLE KNEE STRIKE!! Dubian is down!! Noah hooks the leg!!

Referee: ONNNNEEEEEE…..TWOOOOOOOOOOOOO………THRRRREEEE!!

(DING! DING! DING!)
“Another former champion and a hall of famer. Another man who doubted me. Another man who belittled me and spat on my talents. Considered me just a young pup with an undeserved chip on his shoulder. Devan Dubian was introduced quickly to my knee and he was made to understand why I am widely considered as the future of this company by many. Devan Dubian was treated just like he claimed he would do to me. He was treated as if he were just some punk that came off of the streets looking to make a name for himself. Devan Dubian doubted me, and he ended up on the wrong side of the three count.”

VARIOUS CLIPS.
DUBIAN FROM BEHIND WITH A CLUBBING BLOW TO NOAH! CLOTHESLINE TO THE BACK OF THE HEAD!!! AND DUBIAN QUICKLY GRABBING NOAH UP!! BLEEDING EDGE!!! ---- Dubain coming in and being the one to raise Noah’s hand to the crowd!!!!

Pierre: Noah nodding, they’ve done it!!! Noah patting Dubain on the shoulder- BLEEDING EDGE!!!!!! BLEEDING EDGE!!!!! WHAT IN THE WORLD??

The arena goes silent as Devan Dubain looks into the hardcam….. And shrugs.
“Attacks from behind do not rattle me. I’m not consumed with the idea of revenge. Know that if I have a chance, I will rectify that - but my one goal. My one objective for Pain for Pride is to become the Cash in the Vault winner. It’s to take one step closer, climb up another rung of the ladder, to becoming one of the best ever in the EAW. All it shows to me is the opposite. That I have gotten into the heads of my peers, despite what they have said. They all know exactly what they’re stepping up against at Pain for Pride, and they all know the very real outcome that could happen; Noah Reigner winning the Cash in the Vault.”

“I’ve said there would be seven broken hearts and only one winner before, but I echo that more than ever now. All seven of my opponents have so much stock in themselves in this match. All seven of my opponents have built themselves up as the eventual winner. All seven of my opponents have type casted me as some fluke who has no chance at winning this thing. Some of my opponents, I don’t doubt for a second, have the skill set necessary to actually win this, but they lack the determination to be the best that I have. The sound of seven hearts breaking simultaneously will be deafening. Raven, Eerbus, Devan, Lucas, Kevin, Consuela and Lucian will all be blinded when they’re on the ground, or on the outside of the ring, looking up at me as I stand ontop of the ladder with the briefcase held tightly in my hands.”

“I claimed beating Devan Dubian was a forceful changing of the guard, but I was shortsighteded then. That was just another victory. Winning THIS match. Winning the Cash in the Vault is the REAL changing of the guard. We will step into the next year for EAW with a new major player. With a new face of the company. With a new man on top of the roster.....

And that man WILL be Noah - FUCKING - Reigner.”

----------------------

Madison took a drink from her beverage, then turned to Chloe.

MADISON REIGNER “Is it weird of me to be nervous for Noah?”

CHLOE REIGNER “Why would that be weird?”

MADISON REIGNER “Well. This is the first time I’m seeing him wrestle live. You know it’s mother instinct not to let their babies get hurt, and the way you and him describe this match - it’s a pretty violent one. Right?”

CHLOE REIGNER “Oh for sure it is. It’s a ladder match, mom. The goal is to climb the ladder and grab the briefcase that’s hanging above the ring. The ladders can be used as weapons, along with anything else anyone can grab. But, Noah has experience in these matches. I told you the match he had to win to get here was a ladder match. And ontop of that, when he wrestled in San Diego - the company was called SoCal Ultraviolent. So literally ladders are the least violent thing Noah’s done. I mean. He fought and destroyed a McDonalds, and a strip club. So this is nothing.”

Madison just stared blankly at Chloe.

CHLOE REIGNER “Trust me, mom. It’s going to be violent, but you have nothing to worry about. Noah is a battle hardened vet when it comes to this type of stuff.”

MADISON REIGNER “Well, be that as it may - I can’t control myself if I happen to watch through my hands. You know I don’t like that violent stuff. … But I’m actually so excited to watch Noah live.”

CHLOE REIGNER “I have never seen him live either, just videos and such I’ve found on the internet. This is going to be amazing.”

Chloe said excitedly.

-------------------

Noah Reigner and Cameron Church stood in the makeshift backstage area of the Last Vegas Motor Speedway. There wasn’t necessarily a “backstage” area, but where they were - had a few catering tables underneath tents. Noah and Cameron stood off to the side. Noah leaning against the side of a trailer. He wore his ring-gear and was ready for whenever he was told to go out. Cameron stood in front of him, arms crossed over his chest. He looked at him through the sunglasses he wore. As always, Cameron was focused and one hundred percent emotionless. Noah’s head was lowered, his hair falling down in front of his face.

CAMERON CHURCH “Remember what we’ve went through, Noah. Remember everything you’ve done in order to get to this position in the EAW. Remember everyone that you’ve beaten that have doubted you, that have went on long tangents about how you don’t deserve to be here. --- And then I want you to remember how you were when you and Evelyn came to me. I want you to think about on how you were left when you’re contract with Union Battleground expired. You were underappreciated. You were beaten and you were broken. In just a matter of months, you have become of the hottest talents in the world.”

NOAH REIGNER “Lucian thinks otherwise. I’m not worth his breath nor time, he says.”

CAMERON CHURCH “That will change quickly.”

NOAH REIGNER “You want me to be worried about him, Cameron.”

CAMERON CHURCH “I do. He is a formidable opponent and perhaps one of the other favorites to win this thing.”

NOAH REIGNER “Lucian has cut down my victories, citing them as irrelevant - saying that I’ve beaten a bunch of nobodies who others have earlier claimed them to be as ‘mid-card talent’. But in the same breath, he says whether he was main eventing, or fighting on the mid-card - he gave everything he had. Have I not? Have I not stepped into the ring each and every week since my arrival here and have I not single handedly won every match I’ve taken place in? I have not relied on you, nor Evelyn to help pull my victories to my side. He wants me to research him and see just how good, how dangerous he is in the ring, but no one has bothered to do the same with me. No one has bothered to go back and pull tapes from any other promotion I’ve competed in, or currently compete with. Instead they want to assume I’m some know-it-all kid who assumes that I’m good in the ring, like I’m fresh out of training and you’re just here to be my fucking pep squad. Long before I’ve entered this company, I’ve paid my dues and earned my way. I know Lucian, Erebus, Consuela or whoever won’t give a fuck - but that’s their own issue, not mine. I don’t need to know the history of the company, what Lucian accomplished and did way back when, or who Lucian’s beaten to know that I have every right to be in this match that he does. I don’t need to know that shit to know that I am just as capable of winning this match as any other competitor in the field. And I don’t need to know any of that to know that Lucian will soon understand why there is a lot of hype and talk surrounding me. And he’ll soon understand WHY it’s all fucking deserved…”

CAMERON CHURCH “That’s it, mate. You’re end goal is the Cash in the Vault briefcase without a question. But at the very least, you will teach them all a very important lesson; not to underestimate you. Lucian and Erebus both. Erebus wants your undivided attention, Noah. I suggest you go out there and show him why he shouldn’t.”

Noah has lifted his head by now, his eyes focused on Cameron as he spoke.

NOAH REIGNER “What does Erebus want me to do? Stroke his ego and give him some gratification by mentioning his name? I don’t care what Erebus wants, and I don’t really care he has to say. But because you asked, I listened to a couple of his videos and he wants to know if my eight victories are enough to satisfy a hunger to win? What, is he fucking mental? As Consuela said a few days back, you’re in the wrong business if you stop trying to push yourself further and further. If you stop trying to win, then there isn’t a point. If you’re not hungry for another win, a bigger win than the last - then what the fuck are you doing in the business? NO, Erebus, my victories prior to tonight haven’t satisfied my appetite. He can claim my victories are irrelevant all he wants, but those victories are the ones that brought me to the exact same place that he’s at. I don’t know what people don’t understand about that? Each and everyone of them have cut me down, saying my victories over lesser-talent than they are meaningless, but in the grand scheme of things - I have ended up in the same match with all of these big shots, haven’t I? It shouldn’t matter who I’ve beaten previously. All that should matter is that I’m coming into the match with the same goals and intentions as them, and yeah - this match is going to be full of us trying to stop the other from climbing the ladder to win. That’s the fucking point of a ladder match. Erebus wants to know why I don’t acknowledge him? Maybe because he makes less sense than fucking Raven Roberts does. I have not ‘accepted defeat’, nor will I accept or admit it until that final bell is rung. .. He likes to tell all of his opponents that darkness is before them, him being the bringer and I guess the inevitable loss being the actual darkness? Too bad I’m the brightest star in this fucking match that no self-proclaimed ‘darkness’ will consume. The dark days in EAW are long gone and it’s time for Erebus to sit the fuck down.”

Cameron smirked at Noah’s reaction to Erebus’ comments.

NOAH REIGNER “And Raven Roberts is fucking desperate to have her face kicked in, isn’t she? She claims that she’s been busy training - running up and down ladders - whatever that means. She claims she’s been so busy but everything I’ve seen from her is shopping, eating ice cream, going to a fucking movie and lately? What was she doing?! … Standing in a kitchen, eating a piece of fucking toast. Yeah. So busy. The only thing she’s busy doing is stepping in front of a camera every fifty-five minutes to send out another promotional video, filled with nothing but mindless dribble, in hopes that her promotional efforts will result in some kind of win. I’m quite confident that’s not how things play out in the ring. I mean, I know for a fact that I’m not stepping back just because she’s talked about this match thirteen times. But, she’s been in front of a camera one too many times that she doesn’t recall what she’s said in the first few videos. I mean, she was quick to cut me down and join with the bangwagon that I didn’t really understand the concept of this company, this match, or the rules. She stated that I was underdeveloped in this scenario because I was in a hardcore company. Which doesn’t make any sense. She stated that my technique was poor, and that was why you were here - which she’s only half right. You’re here because I’m not a submission fighter and that’s what you are. That and you’re an ultimate strategist. But now she’s asking if I ignored her when she said I have potential? I’m sorry, I filter out pure bullshit. I don’t have the time to keep chasing you, I don’t have the time to listen to whatever you seem to think makes sense on that day. Only for you to change your mind later. I don’t give two fucks about her ‘eight year indy experience’, just like she doesn’t give a fuck about my other companies or the one that I currently represent that she claims runs out of a small-town bingo hall, when in fact their least event - which was called Grindhouse - ran out of a fucking arena in Disney World. What ‘small time company’ can afford that? -- That’s irrelevant, I know, I just wanted to make that point.”

“She wants me to admit she’s gotten into my head? Okay. Sure. Raven’s gotten into my head. But not for the reasons she thinks. She’s not gotten into my head because I find her a legitimate threat. She’s not gotten into my head because I’ve come to a sudden realization that she’s a credible athlete. She’s gotten into my head simply due to annoyance. She’s gotten into my head because she’s so fucking desperate for someone, anyone, to acknowledge her because she needs someone to validate her existence in this match and in this company. Maybe it’s because Raven secretly knows what everyone else knows and has said, to be true. That she’s useless. That she’s a faux-champion, a piss-poor option B for the Crowe’s Nest - seemingly only brought in because her name is a bird reference. And more importantly, that she’s fucking trash. Raven is as pathetic as they come, and if she truly thinks that she has the slightest chance of winning this match, she’s mistaken. I mean, she said she had to train ‘running up and down a ladder’ to get ready for this. Who in the shit doesn’t know how to climb a ladder? That’s how you train for this? I’m sure glad she’s managed to get that down pat. But it won’t help her when myself, or one of the other guys whom she’s managed to annoy to no end, put her down and out of her misery. Maybe should have been focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent, not how to position your feet when climbing the rung of a ladder. Raven says she knows where she stands in the company, but I don’t believe she does. I believes that she knows where she wants to stand, but she’ll never be in that position. In fact, the only position she’s going to find herself is discarded in the corner like the rest of the trash that has ever entered this company and has burned out their welcome. She’ll lose the tag team championships first and then she’ll come into Cash in the Vault looking for a bit of redemption and find herself at the mercy of seven other people all fighting for the same prize. All seven of which can absolutely demolish her on their worst days. To be blunt, Raven Roberts is fucked.”

Cameron did smile when Noah mentioned Raven losing the tag team championships. Because she would be losing them to his girl, Kassidy Heart. But after a moment, he wiped that smile from his face and looked back at Noah.

CAMERON CHURCH “You have one more credible threat, Noah. Consuela.”

NOAH REIGNER “Oh, the one convinced that I’m going to allow the competition to ‘eat me up’, or something right? Why are they going to eat me up, Cameron? Because - even after everyone else in this match has said otherwise - she claims that no one likes my undefeated record. Consuela says I have a target on my back because of that, and hey - she could be right. But she’s also said that everyone else in this match are upset that I can say I walked into this company two months ago and have capitalized on every opportunity that I’ve seen. What do you want me to do? Apologize? Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is a dog eat dog world - and lady, I’m a fucking Dog of War. I rep that name and those colors proudly. And one thing is certain about us Dogs - when we have our sights set on something, we achieve it. When there’s a goal hanging in front of us, we obtain it. The Cash in the Vault is in front of me, and while I may not necessarily need it - which we can both agree on, it’s a goal that I plan to accomplish regardless. Consuela says that all eyes are on me to see whether or not I can prove myself. To see whether or not I will falter at the first sign of pressure. You know what I say to that? Good. I want all of the eyes, all of the attention on me - because that is where it deserves to be. It deserves to be on the man who will - very soon - be the face of this company. Everyone should stop and witness the birth of the new era because I’m getting sick of hearing person after person say the same shit about how my wins have been mediocre and how I haven’t earned my place. So I’m focused, determined and driven to make sure people like Consuela, and all of the boys and girls in the back - know who the fuck Noah Reigner is after Pain for Pride.”

Noah meant every word that he said, and you could tell that when every word he said at the end became more and more bass filled. Cameron pushed his sunglasses to the top of his head for a moment, looking right into Noah’s eyes.

CAMERON CHURCH “That’s the goal. To make everyone know who you are, now. And there is no better platform than the biggest stage in EAW. Regardless of the outcome, Noah, I want you to know that you have exceeded all expectations in this company. No matter what anyone else says, you have come into this place and you have earned your position. You earned your spot in this match, and you earned your spot on Dynasty. Today, you earn your spot amongst the elite of the company. … Now what is that little catchphrase you started to say when we first entered the company?”

Noah smirked.

NOAH REIGNER “House Always Wins.”

CAMERON CHURCH “That’s right. House. Always. Wins.

Noah and Cameron fist-bumped on another before Cameron put his sunglasses back on. Evelyn Ridley approached the duo from the side. She handed Noah a bandana, the same color as the designs on his shorts. He folded and tied it around his face. The words “DOG OF WAR” printed where his mouth would be. He adjusted his cut off leather vest which he wore over a heavily altered “Assault Rifle” shirt with the arms completely removed. Evelyn nodded her head and the two walked off.
