“Have you heard a fucking word I’ve said?”

Xavier Williams’ voice cut through Harlow Reichert like a knife and she jerked her head in his direction. She was met with an angry look for her efforts and the redhead let out a sigh.

“Sorry.”

“Sorry doesn’t cut it. You went on national television last week and declared yourself as an entrant into Empire’s Grand Rampage match. As soon as you did that, you sealed your fate for the foreseeable future. I’m going to work you like a dog and make sure you don’t embarrass yourself in a match that’s nothing more than a shitshow. There won’t be any strategy to implement, and technical wrestling can’t help you. You’re going to have to go in there, hope for the best, and do whatever you can do to make sure you’re at least one of the final five. That would be a respectable showing for your first ever battle royal. Not to mention you have a no-disqualification match this week on Empire, which is a good match for you and something you need to win.” Xavier sighed and raked a hand through his hair. “Why the fuck are you distracted?”

Harlow bit down on her bottom lip. She wasn’t exactly in the business of opening up to people, but she did have a lot on her mind. It would be nice to have someone to speak too, but Harlow knew better than to expect any type of kindness from Xavier. “It’s nothing. I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention.”

The Hall of Famer rolled his eyes. “Clearly we aren’t going to get anywhere today unless you just spit it out. I need you focused on Celes Dumont because remember, this is a week by week process, and clearly that’s not going to happen until just tell me whatever it is that’s keeping you from listening to me.”

It was after hours and the EAW Performance Center had shut down for the day. But when you were tied to a Hall of Famer who had a vested interest in your career, you got special perks, and being able to train away from the rest of the rookies and hopeful up and comers was one of them. At the moment, Harlow was dressed for a workout. She was wearing a pair of red leggings with black trim, a matching sports bra style top, her wrestling boots, and kick pads. Her hair was pulled back into a sloppy bun and very little makeup was on her face. Harlow always kept it simple; mascara, concealer, and chapstick. Xav was wearing an old Xavier Williams ‘Hall of Fame Champion’ tee shirt, workout shorts, wrestling boots, and knee pads. When he didn’t stop glaring at her, she let out a groan and leaned against the ropes.

“It’s just going to piss you off more.”

“More than likely,” Xavier deadpanned. Harlow pissed him off a lot, but here he was. He knew Harlow pretty well by now, and she was always stoic and rather unaffected by whatever was going on around her. She kept to herself, worked hard, and was slightly irritating when she decided to let her personality show. But there was a different energy around her tonight, and Xav had picked up on it the moment she walked through the door. “But you’re not yourself,” he relented. “And I want to know what’s wrong.”

Harlow hesitated, but she finally gave in. “Relationships aren’t really my thing, but when I decided to give whatever this thing with Jax is a try, I knew there would be a chance my emotions would get involved. There are feelings there, and I can’t get what happened on Showdown out of my head. Terry Chambers did not deserve that, and the fact Jax had a huge role in that makes me question absolutely everything I have come to know about him. The Roundtable literally murdered a man, and those graphic images are destroying me right now. I’m not even texting him back right now because I literally don’t know what to say. This is literally uncharted territory for me, and I don’t know to compartmentalize it and get my mind off of it.”

Xavier was silent for a minute, almost like he was debating on how to actually respond to Harlow. “I hate you tell you, Harlow, but that is not the worst thing that’s ever happened in EAW before. My daughter was kidnapped once upon a time, mocked for being four, and nearly sacrificed for some fabricated figment of Methuselah’s imagination. I can’t tell you how many times people have been destroyed and used for the personal gain of others. This is a cutthroat business and the only thing that matters is getting ahead. What the Roundtable did was cement themselves as a force to be reckoned with, and they showed the entire world that they are not afraid to get blood on their hands. It doesn’t matter if you agree with it, because you can’t go back and change it, and I bet none of them have a single ounce of remorse for what they did.”

Harlow couldn’t help the look of disgust and disappointment that crossed her face. “That doesn’t mean I have to agree with it.”

“I’m just going to cut right to the point. I don’t understand anything about Celes Dumont. I’m not sure who she is, or what she is trying to portray herself to be. I see her as a clout chaser, to be honest. She name drops person after person she wants to face, instead of actually looking at her own brand for competition, and I don’t really get that concept. Empire is the most competitive brand in all of EAW, and I’m just truly confused as to why Celes feels like she needs to venture outside of our show, to try and find people to compete with. I’m all for a person wanting to push themselves, I guess, and face the best of the best, but you have to prove yourself first and show that you are actually worthy of those types of matches. You have to prove yourself to be a consistent competitor on your own brand, before you can even think of representing it by going to another show and competing. I get that all of us want more, and we all think highly of ourselves, but you have to actually EARN the right to compete against whoever you want. You have to EARN the right to have those big time matches, against those big time competitors , and you have to EARN the right to have your limits pushed like that. More than anything, you actually need to be good enough to defeat the people placed in front of you before you start daydreaming and thinking you can hang with the upper echelon of this company, and give them something to think about when they watch a match or video of you. When I look at Celes Dumont, I see someone who hasn’t done a whole hell of a lot. I’m not sure why she believes that automatically makes her qualified to face people like The Visual Prophet and Darkane.

The New Breed Champion is one of the most polarizing figures to ever step foot inside of EAW, and in no world, except for her own deluded one, is Celes versus The Visual Prophet a match the people want to see. It’s a mismatch that even the most ignorant wrestling fan would recognize and it would end with Celes in a bodybag, and buried deeper than Lucas Johnson on Dynasty against Noah Reigner. The Visual Prophet would chew Celes up and spit her out worse than Gavin Kirkland does on commentary every week. When a two-time champion in Andrea Valentine and my GREAT friend and rival Tyler Wolfe can’t put Viz away, I KNOW that Celes won’t be able to even hang. Celes can’t take care of business on Empire. She has been verbally and physically destroyed by everyone she’s stepped inside the ring with. I highly doubt Kendra Shamez will ever have enough faith in Celes Dumont to let her represent Empire in any special cross-brand match that matters (because a radio silent one on Dynasty doesn't count), and she certainly can’t be trust to try and bring a title back to Empire. If the whole Celes/Viz scenario wasn’t enough to leave me scratching my head, then Celes name-dropping Darkane surely left me puzzled. I’m not sure why she would ever think having a match with him would be a good idea, especially when Empire’s best just had their hands full with him and his tag team partner on Dynasty the other night. If Sienna Jade and Kassidy Heart - two women who claim to be ‘unfuckwithable’ or whatever - had a difficult time dealing with The Grave Worm, then how can Celes expect to fare any better? I refuse to believe she’s dumb enough to think she’s on the same level as the Women’s World Champion and Iconic Cup holder, but in her world where someone named Zack Ryder exists and women wrestlers are called ‘divas’, she probably does believe she’s a high level talent.

Sad.

I’ll be the first to admit that hardcore wrestling isn’t my specialty, so come Empire I will be out of my element. I’m a pure technician and probably the best actual wrestler on the Empire roster. That’s how I was trained, and that is what I’m good at. The last time I found myself in situation where the rules were lax, Tyler took advantage of the lack of experience of her two opponents and won a chance to challenge for the New Bred Championship. I left Empire with a broken face and a concussion, but I have chalked all that up to a learning experience. Tyler Wolfe was willing to get blood on her hands to get what she wanted, and that’s what it takes I guess. You have to be willing to get your hands dirty to get the things you deserve. The best competitors in this company are the ones who can adapt to any situation and any opponent, and that’s why I’m willing to take on Celes at her own game. With Grand Rampage right around the corner, testing myself in this kind of unfamiliar situation seems like great match prep to me. Celes, I know you want to say you’re ready to unleash the monster, but please don’t make the assumption that I’m intimidated by whatever that means to you. No shiver went down my spine. I didn’t get goosebumps, or second guess my decision to take this match against you. I wake up every morning and go to work knowing that I’m training alongside a man who was mentored by someone who was an actual monster.

Xavier Williams has seen the darkness and he’s made it his mission to prepare me for whatever may come. Before you scoff at that, I would advise you to do your homework on the team I have surrounded myself with. My brother is the one who laid my foundation. Aron Reichert is the best unsigned wrestler in the world. He’s cut from the Combat Church material, and that is the current home of your World Heavyweight Champion, Noah Reigner. I’ve since moved on, working at the EAW Performance Center and surrounding myself with a Hall of Famer. It’s only a matter of time before I break out and get that first big win I’m searching for. But until then, you’ll do. I’m going to enjoy toying with you this week and reminding you of just how irrelevant you are to everyone around here. You wasted everyone’s time last week when you decided to focus on ‘dream’ opponents instead of focusing on the person you were actually facing. You saw a pretty face and a showboater, and made assumptions about a person’s talent level based on what you saw on the outside. You assumed that because your opponent looks like a model she couldn’t whip your ass all over the ring. Here’s some facts for you, Celes. EAW doesn’t sign scrubs. Every person signed to this company has some kind of talent that makes them special, even you despite the fact you do everything in your power to sway our opinions the other way. You were humbled last week, just like you were humbled when you faced Cleopatra and Amber Keys - women you also refused to respect despite their legacies, and every single other person you’ve ever faced off against. I can’t imagine how bad you’ll feel when a pure wrestler steps inside your comfort zone on Thursday and beats you at your own game. That’s exactly what I plan on doing too, Celes. I’m on the road to Grand Rampage, and I’m not stopping until I have secured my place at Pain for Pride. You’re going to have to eat your words… again, and go back to the drawing board. Once again, you’re going to have to evaluate yourself because what you’re doing isn’t good enough. You’re going to once again question whether or not you even belong here or if you have the ability to dig deep and find your true identity. You know that what you’re doing now isn’t working. You’re coming off as a clout chaser and a try hard, and no one is ever going to respect you for that or take you seriously.

I don’t respect you.

That’s for sure.
